W5VY Profile

Pat Patterson, W5VY

First licensed in 1964 as WN5KAK. My Novice rig was a Hallicrafters S-20R and 6AG7+807 40M only xmtr.  My first DX was New Jersey….sure seemed like DX to me then. WA5KAK from 1965-2004.  W5VY since June, 2004. The previous holder of W5VY was also a Patterson (no relation).  Joe “Pat” Patterson was a legend on 6 meters.  He had many “firsts” on 6M and was very active in SMIRK.  I held reciprocal call GM5AMD from 1968-70 while serving with the USN at RAF Edzell on the east coast of Scotland.  Operated from KG6AAY on Guam 1970-71.  I was a member of ADXA in the early ‘80s for a few years.  Marital problems ended my QTH with a tower.  Several years of apartment living and a love affair with airplanes kept my amateur radio activity to a minimum in the ‘90s.

Moved to present QTH in 1999 and put up wire antennas.  Bands were in good shape and I started doing DX contests with low power/wires.  There are too many trees for a tower at this QTH.  I have a five band Hex Beam hanging from an Oak tree limb.  I also have a 80M 1/4wave wire vertical suspended by a catanery between two trees.  Rigs are a TT Orion II, Drake TR-7 and a Heathkit SB-1000 amp.  I recently achieved 5BDXCC (#6,136 signed by Joel).

I still enjoy contesting but seems like I don’t have enough time to participate a lot.  I also hope to be the DX one of these days.  My brother-in-law has a house in the Bahamas so I may give that a go.

73 and see you on the bands,

Pat
